Biography
James W. Rawlins earned his B.S. in Polymer Science in 1993 and his Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering in 1999, from The University of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss). His professional career began as technical director with Highland International, Inc., in Boone, NC, a protective coatings manufacturer. In 2000, he joined Bayer Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA, as a senior research chemist and in 2002, was promoted to technical marketing director for Europe in Leverkusen, Germany. Dr. Rawlins joined Southern Miss as assistant professor of Polymer Science and Engineering in 2004 and was promoted to associate professor in 2009 and full professor in 2018. He presently directs a 11+ member research team that includes 3 graduate students. He has published 57 peer-reviewed articles; delivered more than 115 scientific presentations, delivered 82 conference papers, and 67 poster presentations; lectured at numerous short courses; and holds 17 U.S. and European patents. His research focuses on polymer to structure to property to performance relationships, early detection of corrosion and corrosion control; functional coatings; synthesis and characterization; and matrix materials for composites and adhesives.

About the School of Polymer Science and Engineering
The School of Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Polymer Science and Engineering. The goal of our undergraduate and graduate program is to educate incoming students in the theory and practice of polymer science, which is revolutionary and changing the face of our society. Students in all of our degree programs receive valuable training for a career in academia, commerce and manufacture which process and use polymeric materials. The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Polymer Science and Engineering has always pursued excellence in undergraduate and graduate studies and many of our former students hold prominent positions in many scientific and technical organizations. Our graduates are found in all corners of the nation.
